Smart Phones And Consumers

Smart phones play a huge part in people’s lives.  They have transcended their role as a simple communication device, to fun gadget to now being an integral part of the way we get through the day.  A recent study revealed just how much we’ve come to depend on them.

• Nationally, smart phone penetration has grown 43% from Q1 2011 to Q1 2012

• Over six in 10 smart phone owners have used their device everyday for the past week

• 80% of smart phone owners will not leave their home without their device

• In Metro Orlando, smart phone penetration has seen even greater growth. Currently, over 40% of adults live in a household with a smart phone.  In the past year, ownership has increased by over 50%

What Does This Mean To You

Your business needs to be mobilized.  Consumers aren’t just using it often, they won’t leave home without it.  You can also count on the trend to continue – in the next 12 months, nearly 130,000 Metro Orlando adults live in a household that expects to purchase a smart phone.  This large active audience makes having a mobile site extremely important.  If 80% of consumers don’t leave home without their smart phone and you’re site is not optimized for mobile – you are missing out on a huge percentage of consumers.  Smart phone users are frustrated by using standard sites and usually move on to a site that is mobile-ly optimized.  Also look at you content and think about what actions consumers use their smart phones for.  Over half of smart phones users called a local business they searched for on a mobile device and 50% visited the location.  So having an easy click-to-call feature and integrating a map with directions make sense.  Consumers also read and wrote reviews on mobile devices so reputation management is something you should think about.  For more information on how to make your business
